Year 5/6 Tag Rugby
From September to October, we had been practicing Tag Rugby in our PE lessons. We learnt about passing backwards, the knock-on, running with the ball, how to tackle, how to pass, 6th tackle rule, spinning the pass and last and hardest of all to understand – the off-side rule.
Having learnt, discussed and played all of these, we went to the annual Year 5/6 Tag Rugby Tournament in October. We played some of our local school in the group stage and put in our best performance for years. We won 3, lost 2 and drew 1. Despite the fantastic effort form our Year 5’s playing other school Year 6’s, unfortunately we didn’t qualify for the quarter-finals.
Two weeks later, after a little more practice, we went to Beechwood School in Reading. A rugby-mad school, who seem to play rugby most of the time. Again we put in a superb battling performance, but ultimately lost out to a team who play a lot outside of school together.
At the end of November, we were joined on our school field by Whitegrove and Jennetts Park for a mini “Tri-Nations” Tag Rugby tournament. We ran with the ball against Jennetts Park and emerged 5-2 winners. Unfortunately, that is when the rain came and made the grass extremely slippery and the ball very hard to catch. The result being more knock-ons in one game than all the others we had played. Whitegrove had the best of the luck with the ball and ran out 5-3 winners.
Our rugby is getting better, so we’re all looking forward to next years Tag Rugby season and matches.
